Leather and canvas, classic and timeless. Learn the fundamentals of two trades – leather-crafting and sewing – and apply your skills to make a range of small leather goods, utilitarian canvas pieces, and the showpiece – a leather-canvas tote bag/sling bag that is perfect for a casual day out.
Our workshop is hands-on from beginning to end, and all tools and materials will be provided. You will use a range of hand-stitching tools for the leatherwork and industrial sewing machines for the canvas sewing. The quality materials that will be used during the class include vegetable-tanned full-grain buffalo leather, Japanese cotton canvas, and vintage fabrics. Over the course of the workshop, you will complete seven projects that were designed specifically for this workshop. All projects are yours to take home.
For the leather lessons, you will learn the basic fundamentals of leather-crafting including proper cutting techniques, gluing, assembling, hand stitching and edge finishing. Students also get to learn how to install hardware on leather such as rivets, stud buttons, buckles and more. For the canvas lessons, you will learn how to operate a sewing machine and techniques for sewing bags with depth, lining, and zips. Lessons are progressive and students will learn more advanced techniques as the classes progress.
This workshop is a collaboration between the teaching arms of two local bag makers – Atelier Lodge and Sew Fun. Atelier Lodge was born when a local handmade leather goods workshop, Obbi Good Label, decided to teach the craft to a select few aspiring hobbyists. It gradually grew into a full-fledged trade school specialising in the fine art of leather-crafting. Sew Fun was started by the designers and crafters behind Uyii, a Singaporean studio that specialises in locally designed and manufactured fabric bags.
